Vaporizing a concentrate is not one event. It is a sequence. As temperature climbs, different compounds leave the oil at different points. The lightest and most aromatic terpenes go first. Cannabinoids need more heat. The heaviest compounds need more still. For reference: caryophyllene sits around 266°F, pinene around 311°F, THC around 315°F, myrcene around 334°F, limonene around 349°F, CBD in the 320–356°F range, linalool around 388°F. Most of the cannabis terpene range spans roughly 310°F to 400°F. But those are boiling points, and boiling point is not the whole story. Research published in 2022 found that vaporizers generally run below these numbers and still evaporate the compounds — terpenes almost immediately, cannabinoids over a longer dwell. THC needs around three minutes to mostly evaporate at 356°F, and higher temperatures speed that up. So temperature is not a switch that turns compounds on. It is a dial that changes what leaves, how fast, and in what order.

Both failures are easy to recognize. Too cold: thin, weak vapor. Little visible cloud. The oil barely moves. Flavor may be pleasant but there is not much of it, because not enough material is vaporizing to carry it. Too hot: harsh vapor that catches in the throat, and a burnt or acrid note replacing the flavor the oil should have. Large clouds tasting of nothing in particular. The delicate compounds are not being expressed at that temperature — they are being destroyed on the way out, which produces the generic toasted taste every over-driven oil shares. That last point is the clearest diagnostic on the list. When two different extracts taste the same, the setting is wrong.

The principle: the more delicate and aromatic the extract, the lower it wants to run. Live rosin is the most heat-sensitive of the three. It is solventless, terpene-forward, and everything that justifies its price sits in the fraction that leaves first. Run it at the low end. This is the same logic solventless producers already apply at the press, where going above 200°F is understood to start degrading terpenes. Live resin sits in the middle. It carries a full aromatic profile and enough body to want more heat than rosin. Liquid diamonds run highest. The recombined THCa needs more energy to vaporize fully than terpenes alone, and the format is built to take it. Rosin low. Resin middle. Diamonds high.

One habit covers all of it. Start at the lowest setting and work up. The first draws tell you what the oil is capable of aromatically. Step up until the vapor is where you want it, then stop. The reverse does not work. Once an oil has been overheated, the terpenes in the material that already vaporized are gone, and dialing back will not bring them back. Low first. Up from there. Always.
