What Are Liquid Diamonds

Liquid diamonds combine THCa crystals with the terpene-rich sauce they formed in, gently warmed into a liquid.

Diamonds, liquefied

THCa can crystallize into structures the industry calls diamonds. Liquid diamonds are those crystals gently warmed and recombined with their terpene sauce, producing a flavorful liquid concentrate. The format is known for bold flavor and a bright, energetic character.

What THCa actually is

The name is worth unpacking, because it is where most confusion about this format begins. THCa — tetrahydrocannabinolic acid — is the acidic form of THC that exists in the living cannabis plant. On its own it is not intoxicating. Heat converts it into THC through a reaction called decarboxylation, and that is exactly what a lighter or a vape coil is doing. The conversion is not one-for-one, and the reason is molecular weight. THCa weighs 358.47 g/mol. THC weighs 314.46 g/mol. The difference leaves as carbon dioxide when the molecule decarboxylates. Divide one by the other — 314.46 ÷ 358.47 — and you get 0.877. THCa is about 87.7% THC and 12.3% CO₂ by mass. That number is why every lab report in the industry uses the same formula: Total THC = (THCa × 0.877) + THC So a concentrate testing at 99% THCa carries a theoretical maximum of about 87% THC after complete conversion. Reading a label correctly means knowing which number you are looking at.

Where diamonds come from

Diamonds are not manufactured. They grow. THCa is a crystalline compound, and under the right conditions it comes out of solution and forms solid crystal structures — the same way sugar crystallizes out of syrup. Producers create those conditions deliberately. Fresh-frozen cannabis is extracted with hydrocarbon solvent, then given only a light purge — leaving a trace of solvent and, critically, leaving the volatile fraction intact. That extract goes into a sealed vessel held at controlled temperature and is left alone, often for weeks. Slowly it separates into two phases: solid THCa crystals below, and a viscous aromatic liquid above. That liquid is the sauce, and it holds the terpenes. The industry calls this stage diamond mining. Whether an extract separates cleanly is not luck. If purge temperatures run too aggressive or too much of the volatile fraction is stripped early, the THCa has no liquid environment to separate into, and the extract sets up uniformly instead — becoming sugar or crumble rather than diamonds in sauce.

Why the crystals come out so pure

Most cannabis concentrates land somewhere below 90% cannabinoid content. THCa diamonds reach as high as 99% and above — the highest purity anything in cannabis achieves. There is a physical reason, and it is not refinement. A crystal lattice is selective. As THCa crystallizes out of a supersaturated solution, the lattice structure only accommodates THCa molecules. Everything else — residual solvent, plant lipids, other cannabinoids — is excluded and stays behind in the surrounding liquid. Nobody purified those crystals to that number. The geometry did it. That is why diamonds sit at the top of the purity scale and nothing else comes close.

Putting it back together

Separated, neither half is complete. The crystals are nearly pure cannabinoid with very little aroma. The sauce is intensely aromatic but far less concentrated. Liquid diamonds recombine them at production rather than leaving it to the consumer. The crystals are broken down and reintroduced into the sauce at a controlled ratio, producing a single homogeneous liquid carrying both halves — finishing above 90% total cannabinoid content while retaining the strain's aromatic profile. Nothing foreign is added. The extract is taken apart and put back together in a form that pours. Worth knowing: production methods vary meaningfully between producers. Inputs, equipment, solvent handling, process controls and finished composition all differ, and there is no single industry-standard recipe.

Why the format suits vapes

A cartridge needs a concentrate that flows. Solid diamonds do not flow, and neither do stiffer consistencies like budder or crumble. Liquid diamonds are formulated to move through a cartridge and reach a coil. That the concentrate reaches its viscosity by reuniting its own two fractions — rather than by dilution — is the appeal of the format.
